HILTON HEAD, S.c -- The inclement weather around Hilton Head Thursday sneaked up on the MCI Classic field like Tiger woods from five strokes down. Earlier in the week, the weather had been glorious, and players were using phrases like "this is like a vacation" and "this is always one of my favorite tournaments because of the weather."
Ah, how quickly we forget that those April flowers are fueled by those April showers, and Thursday afternoon at Harbour Town went from feeling like a vacation to feeling more like blue-collar work in just a few hours. Here's a quick rundown on some of the best and worst sites and sounds of the day from windswept Sea Pines Resort:
Best Sign that They are Human
"They" would be the players, and the sign would be Ernie Els and Davis Love III - both prodigious drivers of the golf ball - going driver/driver and still not making the green on the par-4 18th hole.
Worst Sign of Fair-weather Fans
For an area that embraces golf like a lover, there were about thirty fans at the 18th hole grandstand as Davis Love III, Carlos Franco, Ernie Els, and the last players of the day came charging in against the wind.
Best fan of the Day
The guy over at the 12th hole who brought enough Irish Whiskey for everyone to slip into their coffee. There weren't many fans out, but the ones that were following the players were hard core.
Worst fan of the day
The guy that was heckling Brain Gay - how does he even know enough about Brian Gay to heckle?
Fan favorite of the day
Because of his appearance in a Foot Joy commercial, and his easy-going nature, the fans warmed up to Tim Heron's charge into a third place. Lumpy, as he is known among fans and friends, fired a 68 to put himself in the hunt early.
Best news for Friday
That temperatures should approach 70 degrees. Yea, we'll wait for that.
