As the home of the former Myrtle Beach Air Force Base for more than a half-century, Myrtle Beach has a soft spot in its heart for those who served our country. Designed to honor our military community with a special event of competition and camaraderie, the May 20-22 Veterans Golf Classic welcomes hundreds of active duty and retired military members and their families for a fun-filled golf tournament and festivities at America’s favorite family beach vacation destination.
Featuring three days of doubles play under a variety formats – better ball, combined net team score and scramble – the Veterans Golf Classic pairs partners by handicap to encourage a level playing field and the opportunity for new friendships to be formed between military brothers and sisters over the game of golf. The field is divided into four flights with familiar names to veterans – Eisenhower, MacArthur, Nimitz and Franks – to provide some intra-branch rivalries.
Anyone who served in the U.S. Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Marines or Navy is eligible to participate, and family and friends are welcome to join in the events surrounding the tournament, including cookouts, post-round parties and an awards dinner and ceremony. Play takes place on nine different courses on the Grand Strand, including layouts like Aberdeen Country Club, Arrowhead Country Club, Burning RidgeGolf Club, Crown Park Golf Club, Long Bay Golf Club, River Club, Sea Trail Plantation Byrd Course, Tradition Club and Wachesaw East Golf Club.
The Veterans Golf Classic offers one of the lowest tournament fees on the Grand Strand at only $255. That includes green fees for three rounds of golf, a cocktail party at check-in, and a gift bag loaded with goodies, such as an official VGC-logoed polo shirt, hat and bag tag, as well as a $20 git card to the PGA Tour Superstore and one dozen Srixon Q-Star golf balls. The tournament also holds a number of drawings, giveaways and awards to sweeten the experience.
Also adding to the excitement of the tournament, the Veterans Golf Classic has been moved from its traditional June date to May 20-22, aligning it with Myrtle Beach’s month-long Military Appreciation Days in May. Among the many events scheduled for the month include the May 26 Military Appreciation Days Parade and Family Picnic at The Market Common (home of the former Myrtle Beach Air Force Base), the May 28 Memorial Day Veterans March and Remembrance Ceremony downtown.
It’s the perfect opportunity to play golf and plan a family vacation in one. MyrtleBeachGolf.com is offering special rates for veterans at a variety of hotels and resorts on the Grand Strand, so the golfer in your crew can spend the day playing golf with his comrades while the rest of the family enjoys the beach, pools, attractions, shopping, dining and all the fun Myrtle Beach has to offer. After your round, enjoy some hang time with the family or your fellow vets.
